Summer #7

Why is it our language is so power obsessed? I want language that is anti-prejudice instead.

The words we pick to describe our games are important. And it is important to have the history of language on our minds. The word remaster is problematic because of its history, and should be replaced. It is also problematic because the word ‘master’ denotes power over someone else, while the the prefix re- adds, in this context, a reestablishment of that power over someone else. However, this is unlike the word ‘masterpiece’ because that word denotes power over an object. But then again, why power over an object? Why is power used to signify good art? Considering our vocabulary will help to create work that is anti-prejudice. These are some words to consider.

  • restore
  • retouch
  • redress
  • repair
  • refurbish
  • reformed
  • revive
  • reprise
  • retake
  • redevelop

These are some possible options, although, this post is to open up the idea of change. It wouldn’t have to be any of these words. Maybe it isn’t even a word that we use, maybe we use a song or a short story.

These are possible metaphor alternatives presented by [ietf]. They are directed toward the expression ‘master/slave’ and it might help provide insight into possible new language.

  • Primary-secondary
  • Primary-replica
  • Leader-follower
  • Active-standby
  • Writer-reader
  • Coordinator-worker
  • Parent-helper

Language is important. Language is metaphorical. Language has a purpose. There is a purpose in calling these games “remastered” however there is a larger, more sinister metaphorical meaning that cannot be ignored.

The word is likely influenced by the music and film industries as an art term

. But gaming is a new industry, and the gaming industry does not need to fall into these same racist and prejudicial traps.
